ANOTHER CASTLE
Original Work
Many of us have heard the phrase, “I’m sorry, but the Princess is in another castle”. That’s what would be told to Mario at the end of a castle level in the original “Super Mario Bros.” for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Taking the idea of multiple castles throughout a vast kingdom, I wanted to design these structures myself. From green meadows, to boiling lava lands, I felt that castles should echo where they resided, while also giving an updated look to that repeating pixelated aesthetic of those old video games.
STAINED PORTRAITS
Original Work
This ongoing series came from a personal challenge. Not only did I want to immortalize people that I hold very dear to my heart, but I also wanted to use minimal detail, including, or excluding in this case, facial features. Accessories, eyebrows, clothing, and hair were all allowed. Overall this was a lot of fun, and I will continue to add more portraits.
MATCH GAME OLYMPUS
Original Work
Growing up, I was always a HUGE fan of the Match Game, especially the episodes from the 70’s. The biggest draw for me was the ridiculous banter that went on with the panelists. From Betty White to Richard Dawson, there was always so much chaos as they attempted to match with the contestants. I wanted to recreate that mayhem with a new crew of motley characters, and the unique personalities of the Ancient Greek gods fit the bill.
ZODIAC DERBY
Original Work
Work in Progress
You can show a lot of character through the vehicle one operates, and kart racing games do this marvelously. I’m translating this idea by taking the western zodiac signs spaceship-like karts. The “drivers” are little aliens that correspond with the element associated with that particular sign. Each space kart also has a unique motor system, be it water propelled or jump activated. Keep an eye out for more updates.
STAR GOLF
Fan Art
Work in Progress
I. LOVE. STAR WARS. No, seriously, I do. In fact, our entire kitchen is Star Wars themed, but that’s beside the point. I originally created the Luke Skywalker piece for one of my nephews who is also a big fan of the saga, but is also a big time golfer. He liked the piece so much that I was requested to do another. I’ve had so much fun creating these that I had decided to create works for all eighteen mini golf holes. Keep an eye out for future updates.
DOUGH-BITS
Fan Art
I am often associated with two things by those who know me well. That is, apart from my love of Star Wars.
1.Donuts (You can see another one of my donut projects here)
2. Super Mario
If I could only eat donuts for the rest of my life I would, and a big reason for my venture into game design can be credited to my love for Super Mario and Nintendo. What better way to honor both of these things than to blend them together into a dozen. This was a fun project, and one that I’m planning on revisiting in the future.
#DrawYourRosterUltimate
Fan Art
Work in Progress
I’m typically not quick when it comes to trends on social media. However, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hop on the bandwagon of creating your Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. The goal is to draw your go-to characters that you play as in the hit Nintendo game with the specific color variations that you prefer. This allowed me to interpret some of my favorite video game characters in my own style, which was a great creative exercise. Wanna play Smash Bros. together? Just let me know via email! I’ll warn you though, if I’m playing as Banjo-Kazooie, you better be on your A game.
GAME STORE DECALS
Commissioned Work
Out in Fair Oaks, California, near where I grew up, is a wonderful retro video game store called Fair Game Retro. It’s a wonderland for every geek out there, with products ranging all of the way back to the Atari 2600. In fact, the majority of my collection comes from this very place. The store had recently went through an expansion, and I was fortunate enough to work with this amazing small business in order to design eye-catching window decals that can be easily seen from the road.
STAR TORTOISE
Commissioned Work
CTEC, or the Communication Technology Education Center, is a non-profit organization that specializes in working with individuals with communication difficulties; to provide them with, and train them to use Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. They have created a training program online in order to better educate those that support individuals with complex communication needs. They’ve titled this STAR video training, and of course it needed a mascot! I worked closely with the organization to create STAR Tortoise, a patient character that’s here to help you through the training. This was one of my favorite projects that I have worked on, and am so pleased that STAR Tortoise is able to do so much good in the community. If you are interested in being STAR certified and learning more about supporting those with complex communication needs, visit them here.
HOLIDAY COCOA
Original Work
The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year, and I wanted to celebrate them in my own way. Meet Cocoa and their marshmallow buddies, each with their own unique personalities. I designed gift packaging kits, ornaments, and greeting cards, all of which were hand made by yours truly. There were a lot of late nights in my office assembling everything, but I wouldn’t have traded that experience for the world. This crew still shows up during the holidays, and may even make an appearance in another interactive project.
ROLLER DERBY FLYERS
Commissioned Work
I knew nothing about Roller Derby before I started working with the Sac City Rollers. I worked with the organization from 2016-2017 by designing marketing materiel for their events. You can see examples of many of the flyers and posters I designed for them below. Not only did I learn so much about this amazing sport, but I had a blast working with them. If you’ve never been to a Roller Derby event in person, I strongly encourage you to do so.
